  • Best for: Families, short rainforest walks, beach swimming when conditions allow, camping/cabin research, MSCW mid-walk stays, quieter midweek forest mornings
  • Time: 1–3 hours for beach + rainforest loop; full day if pairing Burrawang or coastal links
  • Access via the same general South Coast corridor as Pebbly Beach — local roads to Depot Beach / North Durras from the Princes Highway approaches. Why Depot Beach works as a central base

Depot Beach sits in the middle of many Murramarang trips: beach day, short rainforest loop, campground hub, and a logical overnight stop for people walking the Murramarang South Coast Walk (MSCW). North Durras is close enough that mixed groups can get food and a shower plan without driving to Batemans Bay every time.

Aim for one clear plan — beach + rainforest, or Burrawang half-day, or rest day between MSCW segments — not every track in the park from one car park. Fine holiday weekends feel like a packed holiday coast; midweek shoulder seasons feel completely different.

Always use NPWS for live track status, fees and campground rules. This guide is unofficial planning language only. Traditional Custodians: Yuin people. Land manager: NPWS NSW.

Littoral rainforest and the short loop

The Depot Beach Rainforest walk is a sensible first option for families and tired multi-day walkers: a short signed loop (often listed around 0.4 km, Grade 3 — [VERIFY]) through rare littoral rainforest behind the beach. Few stands of this community remain — treat it as precious habitat, not a playground to wander off-track.

Expect roots, steps, possible stepping-stones and shared path with small children. Grip shoes beat thongs. After rain the forest is lush and slippery. The beach is the natural recovery zone after the loop — swim only if conditions and ability allow.

If the loop is closed for works or weather, the beach and picnic precinct can still count as a complete Depot visit. Do not invent a “secret longer rainforest” through closed country.

Burrawang track and MSCW context

Burrawang walking track starts near Depot Beach campground and winds through spotted-gum forest with burrawang understorey — the plant community that defines much of Murramarang’s character. Public materials commonly list about 2 km return, Grade 4, roughly 1.5–2.5 hours — always [VERIFY] live figures on NPWS.

MSCW walkers often plan Depot Beach as a mid-route overnight (camping or cabin packages when offered officially). Day visitors should leave campground roads and sites clear for booked guests and emergency access.

Pair Depot with Pebbly Beach only if parking and energy allow both without rushing rock platforms at the wrong tide. Combine carefully: short rainforest + beach is enough for many first visits.

Camping, cabins and village logistics

Depot Beach campground and cabins are formal NPWS bookings. Research facilities, vehicle limits and booking windows only on official pages. This site never affiliates camping or cabin bookings. Peak school holidays book out early — have a village backup.

Park entry is commonly charged per vehicle per day at machines — [VERIFY]. Passes: official NPWS pass portal only. Public transport is limited; plan a car or organised transfer.

North Durras and South Durras provide accommodation density outside the strictest park nodes. Batemans Bay is the larger service centre for fuel, food and medical needs.

FAQ — Depot Beach

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is the rainforest walk suitable for kids?

Many families use the short Depot Beach Rainforest loop as a kid-friendly first walk when open — it is short and interesting under canopy. Surfaces can still be uneven; supervise near beach and platforms. Confirm live grade and any closures on NPWS.

Can I camp at Depot Beach?

Yes when sites are available — book only through official NSW National Parks camping and accommodation channels. Camping fees are separate from vehicle entry. [VERIFY] current facilities, vehicle limits and rules before you travel.

How far is Depot from Pebbly Beach?

They sit in the same central coastal corridor and are often combined in one day by car or on longer coastal walks. Drive time is short in normal conditions but parking and holiday traffic still cost real minutes — [VERIFY] your route and do not force both if the first car park is full and the group is tired.

Are there entry fees?

Park entry fees commonly apply (often cited ~$8 per vehicle per day — [VERIFY] live). Payment is typically via on-site machines; some locations may be card-only. This site never affiliates entry fees or passes.
