2 days on the ground (1 night)

Two-day coast: Depot base, beaches & forest

Best for: Visitors wanting more than a single Pebbly stop without committing to full MSCW

Night near Depot / Durras or park camping (NPWS booking), rainforest and Burrawang forest time, Pebbly or Dark Beach variety day, village recovery — tide-aware and fee-aware.

Two days lets Murramarang breathe: forest loops, a second beach mood, and a sleep that is not a 3 am Sydney departure. This plan assumes a car and either village accommodation or a booked NPWS campground/cabin.

Park entry fees commonly apply (~$8 per vehicle per day often cited — [VERIFY]). Camping and cabins are official NPWS bookings only — never affiliate. No pets except certified assistance animals.

Verify track status each morning. Cancel or shorten if severe weather is forecast. A shorter rainforest + beach day still counts as a complete Murramarang visit.

Yuin Country. Stay on signposted tracks. Respect adjoining Aboriginal Area rules if you include that loop.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Day 0 evening

    Lock stays + alerts

Confirm NPWS camp/cabin booking or village stay (North Durras, South Durras, Bawley Point, Kioloa). Save or save or save or screenshot NPWS park page, fees, Park Alerts. Pack headtorch even for “easy” days. Agree: Day 1 forest-heavy, Day 2 beach-variety (or reverse if weather says so).

  2. Day 1 morning

    Depot Beach rainforest + Burrawang

Early Depot day-use. Pay entry ([VERIFY]). Walk the short rainforest loop when open, then Burrawang walking track if energy remains (Grade 4 feel despite short distance — [VERIFY]). Water, grip shoes, no off-track forest exploring.

  3. Day 1 afternoon

    Beach recovery + early night

Swim only if conditions allow; otherwise shade and village café. Food plan that does not require a long night drive. If camping, settle before dark; secure food from wildlife; quiet hours.

  4. Day 2 morning

    Pebbly OR Dark Beach focus

Option A: Pebbly Beach wildlife + shoreline (and optional short walk only). Option B: Dark Beach track for a quieter cove mood when open. Do not force both if parking or tides fight you — pick one primary.

  5. Day 2 afternoon

Optional Aboriginal Area OR town exit

If the group is calm and curious: respectful signed loop at Murramarang Aboriginal Area when open — stay on track, take nothing. Otherwise recover toward Batemans Bay or Ulladulla and end cleanly. No dusk cliff improvisation.

Parking & access tips

  • Day-use fills at Pebbly and Depot on peaks — go early both mornings.
  • Pay entry each day as required — [VERIFY] whether your pass or booking changes anything.
  • Campground roads are not overflow parking for day visitors.
  • Never leave bags visible.
  • Have a village backup if a car park is full.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Full 34 km MSCW traverse
  • Two Grade 4 mountain returns in two days for unfit groups
  • Rock platforms on rising tides
  • Night beach walks without local knowledge and lighting
  • Any collection of shells/stone from cultural sites

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Couples, friends and families with one night available
  • People who want forest + beach variety without multi-day pack weight
  • Photographers who can use two different morning lights
  • Visitors happy to swap Day 2 plans for weather

Decision gates

  • If severe weather: shrink to village + short open loops only
  • If heatwave: mountain options off the table; early beach only
  • If Aboriginal Area closed: skip without inventing an off-track alternative
  • If camping booking falls through: village stay — do not free-camp illegally

What success looks like

  • Two distinct Murramarang moods completed (forest + beach)
  • Wildlife left unharassed; cultural sites undisturbed
  • Everyone sleeping or driving home without injury

  • Depot Beach Rainforest walkShort signed loop through littoral rainforest behind Depot Beach. Easy length, still uneven underfoot — a perfect first Murramarang walk when open.
  • Burrawang walking trackForest walk near Depot Beach through a major coastal spotted-gum stand with burrawang understorey. Short distance, Grade 4 effort in public materials — do not confuse “2 km” with “easy flat.”
  • Dark Beach walking trackSigned access to Dark Beach — a more secluded Murramarang beach with distinctive rock formations when open. Easy/moderate walking with full coastal hazards once on the sand and shelves.
  • Murramarang Aboriginal Area walking trackSigned ~2.2 km loop through Murramarang Aboriginal Area, adjoining the national park story. Passes near major cultural sites including midden landscape — stay on track, take nothing, leave no trace.
