Where you start

Signed Dark Beach trackhead (confirm on NPWS)

Access via signed national park track to Dark Beach. Exact parking and approach can vary with temporary works — use official visitor info, not stale pin drops alone.

How to get there

  1. Self-drive via South Durras / central-southern park roads as directed on NPWS.
  2. Park entry fees commonly apply — [VERIFY].
  3. Arrive with tide plan if you want rock-platform exploration.
  4. Limited public transport — car recommended.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Check Park Alerts and the official Dark Beach walking track page.
  2. Carry water, sun protection and grip shoes.
  3. Stay on signed track to the beach; no dune scrambling.
  4. On rock shelves, watch surge and never turn your back on the ocean.
  5. Swim only if conditions and ability allow — unpatrolled.

What to expect

Dark Beach is the quieter cove many visitors want after Pebbly’s popularity — still a national park beach with real ocean energy.

Confirm live grade, distance and access on NPWS; short walks still close for works or weather.

Operator’s reality check

Secluded does not mean safe. Rock formations photograph well and punish inattention.

If swell is large, enjoy the view from stable sand and skip the shelves.

Best conditions

Lower swell, suitable tide for any platform interest, mild temperatures.

Avoid starting platform exploration on a rising tide without an exit plan.

Map (orientation)

Pin may be approximate. Confirm trailheads, parking and track status on NSW National Parks before you drive.

Extra tips

  • Great photography in soft light; harsh midday glare on rock is less kind.
  • Pair with Durras Lake Discovery for a family day with two different water moods.
  • Pack out all rubbish — secluded is not a synonym for “no one will notice.”
  • No pets. Yuin Country.

Often paired with Durras Lake Discovery— only if energy and weather allow.
