Depot Beach Rainforest walk
Guide updated · Park conditions, track status, entry fees, camping availability, facilit…
Short signed loop through littoral rainforest behind Depot Beach. Easy length, still uneven underfoot — a perfect first Murramarang walk when open.
Do not pair: Do not treat this loop as a warm-up then immediately force Durras Mountain if the group is already tired or the car park fight burned an hour.
Turnaround: If the signed loop is closed or a child is unhappy on the first roots, stop. The beach (when conditions allow) is a complete visit.
- Slippery roots in fashion shoes after rain.
- Parking overflow into campground lanes on peak weekends.
- Grade 3 short loop when open — [VERIFY] live NPWS grade
- Commonly 15–45 minutes — [VERIFY]
- About 0.4 km loop — [VERIFY] live
- Effort: easy
- Best for: Families, short nature walks, MSCW rest days, first stop after arrival
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on NSW National Parks (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/murramarang-national-park) and Park Alerts before you go.

Where you start
Depot Beach picnic area / beach precinct
Starts and ends at Depot Beach day-use. Pay applicable entry, then follow signs into the rainforest loop. Beach swimming is optional recovery — unpatrolled.
How to get there
- Drive to Depot Beach / North Durras access roads.
- Park entry fees commonly apply — [VERIFY] live fee and machines.
- Holiday weekends: arrive early for parking.
- Combine with campground stay only if booked via NPWS.
How to do it (step by step)
- Check alerts; confirm loop open.
- Wear shoes with grip — roots and stepping-stones possible.
- Stay on the signed loop; do not expand into closed forest.
- Supervise children near beach and water after the walk.
- Pack out rubbish; keep food away from wildlife.
What to expect
A short, high-value loop: rare littoral rainforest, shade, and a beach finish. NPWS publicly lists about 0.4 km, Grade 3, 15–45 minutes — [VERIFY].
You are not buying wilderness solitude at midday in January — you are buying an accessible forest sample.
Operator’s reality check
Thongs after rain are how easy walks become injuries. Shoes win.
If the car park is full, wait or switch to another precinct rather than blocking campground roads.
Best conditions
Any season with open track. Midweek and early mornings are calmer.
Hot days: do the loop first, then shade and water before beach time.
Two failure modes (and the turnaround)
Failure 1: thongs on wet roots after rain, then a beach swim as if the loop “didn’t count” as a walk. Shoes and supervision still apply.
Failure 2: blocking campground roads when the day-use park is full. Wait, switch precinct, or take the Burrawang / lake option — do not invent parking.
Turnaround: the loop is short; if the track is closed on alerts or underfoot is a mess for the least steady person, skip and use the picnic area / another open beach.

Extra tips
- A great first hour in the park for mixed ages.
- After rain it is prettier and more slippery.
- Pair with Burrawang track only if energy and time remain.
- No pets. Respect littoral rainforest as endangered ecological community context.
- Yuin Country — quiet voices under the canopy.
Often paired with Burrawang track— only if energy and weather allow.
