Three-day MSCW: Pretty Beach to Maloneys Beach

Best for: Experienced multi-day walkers with booked NPWS overnights and one-way logistics sorted

Plan framework for the Murramarang South Coast Walk (~34 km Grade 4): northern start, mid-coast overnights, southern finish — tides, water, bookings and reverse options front and centre.

The MSCW is Murramarang’s flagship multi-day walk: Pretty Beach to Maloneys Beach, about 34 km, Grade 4, typically taken over three days (longer if you add nights). This itinerary is a planning scaffold only — live distances, camp stops, guided package options and closures live on NPWS.

Book campgrounds or cabins only through official NPWS channels. Arrange finish transport before you start. Train with a pack. Tide windows on rock platforms are not optional trivia.

Park entry fees commonly apply for vehicle access ([VERIFY] ~$8 per vehicle per day often cited). Camping fees are separate. No pets except certified assistance animals. Yuin Country — stay on track and respect cultural landscape, including adjoining Aboriginal Area context.

If anyone in the group is new to multi-day coastal walking, walk day segments first or research guided/supported official options before peak-season bookings.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Weeks before

    Bookings + logistics lock

Reserve NPWS camps/cabins or official package products for your dates. Plan second car or transfer for Maloneys Beach finish. Share the plan with a contact person. Check fitness honestly. Buy/verify any annual park pass only via official pass portal if that suits your trip — [VERIFY].

  2. Night before Day 1

    Final weather, tides, alerts

Screenshot Park Alerts, MSCW page, tide tables (BOM), and each overnight confirmation. Pack water treatment if required by camp rules ([VERIFY]). Charge devices; pack power bank. Agree daily bail-out villages.

  3. Day 1

    Pretty Beach → mid-coast overnight

Early start at Pretty Beach. Pay entry as required ([VERIFY]). Walk signed MSCW / northern segments only. Rock platforms only in safe low-tide calm windows per official guidance. Arrive overnight stop (e.g. toward Depot Beach corridor depending on your booked plan — [VERIFY] your itinerary) with daylight margin. Quiet camp; secure food; care for feet.

  4. Day 2

Central coast through forest and beaches

Often the main middle day through central beaches and forest (official materials discuss longer mid-walk kilometres — [VERIFY] your stage plan). Steady pace, water discipline, no off-track headland shortcuts. If weather turns dangerous on platforms, wait for window or use signed inland alternatives only if officially indicated — never climb cliffs off the signed track.

  5. Day 3

Southern cliffs → Maloneys Beach finish

Protect the last morning: food, water, blisters taped. Southern sections can feel cliffier and windier. Pre-agreed pick-up buffer at Maloneys Beach (at least +60 minutes). Celebrate in Batemans Bay after rehydration — not mid-cliff.

  6. Buffer option

    4 days / 3 nights variant

If official guidance or packages suggest an extra night (e.g. arrival night at Pretty Beach), take it. Extra recovery beats forced long days in heat. [VERIFY] current NPWS experience structures for your season.

Parking & access tips

  • Never leave valuables in cars at Pretty Beach or Maloneys for multi-day periods if avoidable — use transfers when possible.
  • Know time limits and any parking rules at start/finish — [VERIFY].
  • Do not block campground access roads with “just five minutes” parking.
  • Pay applicable vehicle entry when using day-use areas — [VERIFY].
  • Have a written pick-up plan with phone numbers on paper, not only in a phone that might die.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Unbooked “we’ll find a camp” improvisation
  • Platform walking on rising tide / big swell
  • Side trips up Durras Mountain mid-MSCW without spare days
  • Heavy luxury kit that turns Grade 4 into Grade “why did we pack the cast iron”
  • Any off-track cultural site wandering

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Fit walkers with multi-day experience or equivalent training
  • Groups with confirmed NPWS overnights and finish logistics
  • People who will reverse or wait for tides without ego
  • Walkers who treat Yuin Country with respect on every kilometre

Decision gates

  • If Park Alerts close a section: follow official diversions or delay — do not wander off-track
  • If heatwave: start earlier, carry more water, consider extra night or cancel
  • If injury appears Day 1: bail to village/medical — do not “walk it off” into Day 3
  • If pick-up fails: have a paid transfer or taxi buffer budget from Maloneys / Batemans Bay

What success looks like

  • Whole group finishes at Maloneys with daylight or planned light and water remaining
  • All rubbish packed out; camps left cleaner than found
  • No wildlife feeding; no cultural site disturbance
  • Clear notes for the next South Coast walk
