Pretty Beach to Durras Mountain walking track
Guide updated · Park conditions, track status, entry fees, camping availability, facilit…
Challenging return walk from Pretty Beach through coastal forest to Durras Mountain viewpoints when open. Grade 4 effort with sustained climbing — early start, full water, honest reverse rules.
Do not pair: Do not pair this return with a full MSCW start the same afternoon. Do not invent a second hard coastal push after descent.
Turnaround: Summit is optional. Reverse when heat, storms, injury or failing light appear — as a group, not a split.
- Empty bottles on a summit return because “we’ll refill at the beach.”
- Starting after a long kangaroo-photo delay so you climb in the heat of the day.
- Grade 4 challenging half-day return when open — [VERIFY] live NPWS grade
- Commonly 3–5 hours — [VERIFY] published times and your fitness
- About 10 km return — [VERIFY] live official distance
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Fit day walkers wanting forest climbs and viewpoints from the northern park
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on NSW National Parks (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/murramarang-national-park) and Park Alerts before you go.

Where you start
Pretty Beach day-use / trackhead
Starts from the Pretty Beach precinct via signed track access. Pay any applicable park entry, use toilets when open, and confirm the track is open on NPWS before you climb.
How to get there
- Drive to Pretty Beach via Kioloa / northern Murramarang access. Common bases: Kioloa, Bawley Point, Ulladulla.
- Park entry fees commonly apply (~$8 per vehicle per day often cited — [VERIFY]). Card-only payment may apply at Pretty Beach — [VERIFY].
- Arrive early on fine weekends — parking is finite.
- Do not leave bags visible in cars.
How to do it (step by step)
- Check Park Alerts and the official Pretty Beach to Durras Mountain track page.
- Pack water (more in heat), grip shoes, rain shell, snacks, charged phone, basic first aid.
- Follow signposted track only. Keep the group together on climbs.
- Turn around as a group if heat, storms, injury or failing light appear — summit is optional.
- Recover at Pretty Beach or Kioloa; do not invent a second hard coastal push the same afternoon.
What to expect
This is one of Murramarang’s classic hard day walks: beach start, forest climb, viewpoints when open. It is a different sport from the short Depot rainforest loop.
Public NPWS materials list about 10 km return, 3–5 hours, Grade 4 — always [VERIFY] live.
Operator’s reality check
If the least fit person in the car is unsure, choose a beach day or Burrawang track instead. Pride has poor traction on steep descents.
Carry real water volume. “We’ll refill somewhere” is not a plan on a summit return.
Best conditions
Cooler mornings, stable weather, shoulder seasons for temperature. Cancel in extreme heat, electrical storms or track closure alerts.
After heavy rain expect mud and slower times.
Two failure modes (and the turnaround)
Failure 1: treating a Grade 4 forest climb as a Pretty Beach “morning stroll” after a late arrival, then running out of water on the descent.
Failure 2: pushing for the summit in heat or after rain-slick roots because a photo from higher ground was the plan. The summit is optional; the return is not.
Turnaround: if the slowest person is already struggling before the viewpoint, reverse as a group. Official signs and live NPWS open/closed status beat a blog time estimate.

Extra tips
- Train on hills before you treat this as a “morning stroll.”
- Spotted-gum forest is beautiful and can be warm — pace yourself.
- Leeches possible in wetter seasons — check ankles at the end.
- Pair with MSCW multi-day only on separate days if you want both.
- No pets. Stay on track. Yuin Country — respectful behaviour.
Often paired with MSCW— only if energy and weather allow.
