One-day Pebbly Beach: wildlife, beach & optional mountain
Best for: First visit from Batemans Bay, Bawley Point, Kioloa or Ulladulla
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
Pebbly Beach kangaroos and shoreline time, optional short coastal or Durras Mountain add-on when open — without pretending you also need the full MSCW before dinner.

Pebbly Beach

This is the classic first Murramarang day for visitors based on the NSW South Coast. Success is one strong beach-and-wildlife story plus an optional hard walk only if fitness and heat allow — not a multi-precinct death march from Pretty Beach to Maloneys before dark.
Protect the experience by saying no early. If the car park is full, switch to Depot Beach. If Durras Mountain is closed or the group is wrecked, beach + respectful wildlife watching still counts.
Always check Park Alerts and the official Murramarang National Park page the morning you leave. Distances, fees and open paths change — this itinerary is planning guidance only.
Park entry fees commonly apply (often cited around $8 per vehicle per day — [VERIFY] live). No pets except certified assistance animals. Stay on signposted tracks. Never feed kangaroos. Traditional Custodians: Yuin people. Land manager: NPWS NSW.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Pick one primary + one optional
Primary = Pebbly Beach wildlife + beach time. Optional A = Pebbly to Durras Mountain only if open, cool enough and the group is fit. Optional B = Depot Beach rainforest loop instead of the mountain. Pack water, sun kit, grip shoes, offline screenshots of NPWS + Park Alerts + tide table if platforms interest you. Set a hard “back in town by” time.
0:00–0:30
Arrive, pay, facilities
Aim for early arrival at Pebbly Beach day-use. Pay applicable entry via machines as directed ([VERIFY] fee and payment methods). Toilets when available; valuables not left visible in cars. Full water bottles; shell accessible. Final alerts check if you still have signal.
0:30–1:30
Wildlife + shoreline (respectful)
Watch eastern grey kangaroos from a distance if present — never feed, crowd or block their path. Walk the beach on stable sand. If rock shelves attract you, only with safe tide and calm seas. Keep children close. This segment alone is a complete first visit.
1:30–4:30
Optional hard walk OR Depot soft option
Optional A: Pebbly Beach to Durras Mountain when open — Grade 4 effort, full water, reverse clock active. Optional B: drive to Depot Beach for the short rainforest loop and a second beach mood. If heat, crowds or fatigue build, skip both optionals and protect the morning win.
4:30–5:15
Return and reset
Back to the car with daylight margin. Change layers if sandy/salty. Do not invent a late Pretty Beach mountain second climb. Check how the least energetic person is actually doing.
5:15+
Town recovery
Food and showers via Bawley Point, Kioloa, Depot / Durras villages, or Batemans Bay / Ulladulla. Note what worked for next time: full Depot day, MSCW segment, or photography dawn return.

Parking & access tips
- Arrive early on fine weekends and school holidays — Pebbly fills.
- Pay applicable entry — commonly cited ~$8 per vehicle per day; [VERIFY] live.
- Use designated parks only; do not block campground or emergency access.
- Never leave bags visible in the car.
- If the lot is full, go to Depot Beach or return later — do not invent illegal roadside parks.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Full Murramarang South Coast Walk multi-day
- Pretty Beach to Durras Mountain stacked after a hard Pebbly mountain
- Late-day rock platforms on a rising tide
- Any off-track “secret kangaroo selfie” approach
- Maloneys Beach cliff day from a late Pebbly start
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- First-timers based on the South Coast with a real full day
- Families and mixed groups who will keep wildlife distance
- Visitors happy if beach + kangaroos alone become the whole day in heat or closures
- Fit walkers who may add Durras Mountain only with honest conditions
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If Park Alerts show closures: shrink to open beach nodes only — do not improvise off-track
- If entry machines fail: follow on-site instructions; have card and cash; [VERIFY] backup options
- If kangaroos are present and crowds are pushy: model distance; leave if people are feeding animals
- If temperature is extreme: skip mountain option entirely
- If anyone suggests starting the full MSCW after 11 am: say no
What success looks like
- Everyone back in town with water margin and moods intact
- One clear Pebbly story completed well (beach ± honest optional walk)
- Entry fee handled without drama
- Notes for next time: Depot forest day, MSCW multi-day, or dawn photography return
