Pebbly Beach to Durras Mountain walking track
Guide updated · Park conditions, track status, entry fees, camping availability, facilit…
Grade 4 forest climb from the Pebbly Beach side to Durras Mountain when open. Hard day-walk effort with rewarding views — treat water, heat and reverse rules seriously.
Do not pair: Do not stack this with a long MSCW platform day the same afternoon. Do not leave the signed track to “find better kangaroo angles.”
Turnaround: If the first steep section already feels like a mistake, reverse. Success is back at the car with water margin — not a summit selfie.
- Kangaroo-queue delay that pushes the climb into heat.
- Following a GPS track that is not the signed NPWS walk when the official track is closed or realigned.
- Grade 4 challenging return when open — [VERIFY] live NPWS grade
- Commonly 3–5 hours — [VERIFY] for your group
- Commonly published around 6.6 km return on NPWS (older blogs vary) — always [VERIFY] live official distance
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Fit walkers based at Pebbly / Depot wanting a mountain day without starting at Pretty Beach
Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on NSW National Parks (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/murramarang-national-park) and Park Alerts before you go.

Where you start
Pebbly Beach day-use / signed track access
Starts from the Pebbly Beach precinct via signed walking track. Combine carefully with kangaroo-watching time so you still start the climb early enough.
How to get there
- Drive to Pebbly Beach via Bawley Point / Depot Beach corridor.
- Park entry fees commonly apply (~$8 per vehicle per day often cited — [VERIFY]).
- Early arrival on peak days for parking.
- Public transport limited — self-drive default.
How to do it (step by step)
- Confirm open status on NPWS / Park Alerts.
- Pay entry as directed; secure the car; full water bottles.
- Follow the signed Pebbly Beach to Durras Mountain track only.
- Steady pace on climbs; rest in shade; turn back early if needed.
- After descent, keep wildlife distance at Pebbly — tired people make poor kangaroo decisions.
What to expect
A proper mountain-style day walk from one of the park’s busiest beach nodes. Expect forest, gradient and a fitness bill — not a flat beach stroll.
Live NPWS distance has been published around 6.6 km return Grade 4; third-party numbers differ — [VERIFY] official page only.
Operator’s reality check
Pebbly’s kangaroos are not a warm-up lap. If the group burns an hour on photos in full sun with empty bottles, skip the mountain.
Success is safe return to the car with water margin remaining.
Best conditions
Early starts, mild temperatures, clear alerts. Midweek outside school holidays reduces parking stress.
Cancel for severe heatwave or storms.
Two failure modes (and the turnaround)
Failure 1: burning the cool morning on kangaroo photos at Pebbly, then starting a Grade 4 climb in full sun with empty bottles.
Failure 2: treating published kilometre figures as a guarantee. Official NPWS distance/grade/open status on the sign and Park Alerts beat older blog numbers.
Turnaround: if parking is full, heat is already high, or the slowest walker is unhappy at the first steep pitch, skip the mountain and keep the beach day. Reverse together.

Extra tips
- Do not try to cram this with a long MSCW platform day the same afternoon.
- Grip shoes mandatory — not sand thongs.
- Photograph kangaroos before or after the climb, not as a mid-walk detour off-track.
- No pets. Pack out rubbish.
- Yuin Country — stay on signposted track.
Often paired with Depot rainforest— only if energy and weather allow.
